Rocky Hill, Conn., March 2, 2007 – The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) today announced that the Town of North Haven has become the latest community in Southern Connecticut to commit to the SmartPower 20% by 2010sm Clean Energy Campaign. Working to create a cleaner environment and greater energy independence, North Haven joins 36 other Connecticut municipalities in committing to purchase 20% clean energy for its municipal facilities by the year 2010.
The SmartPower 20% by 2010 campaign is a challenge to cities and towns, faith communities, colleges and universities, and businesses to start choosing clean energy. CCEF supports this campaign as the lead funder of the Connecticut office of SmartPower, a nationwide nonprofit marketing organization dedicated to promoting clean energy – sending the message that clean energy is available and works.
“We are delighted that North Haven has made the commitment to the 20% by 2010 campaign and look forward to seeing the town boost its commitment to clean energy even further by earning the designation of a Clean Energy Community through our Connecticut Clean Energy Communities Program,” said Lise Dondy, president of CCEF. “With 55 North Haven residents already choosing clean energy through the CTCleanEnergyOptions program, North Haven is well on its way to reaching that goal.”
Representative Steve Fontana stated, "I commend North Haven's leaders for making this commitment to help to build a cleaner, greener energy future for our state and town. The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund is working hard to promote renewable energy, and I'm proud that North Haven will now join them in that effort. I look forward to doing my part to promote the CTCleanEnergyOptions program among North Haven's residents, and, I hope, seeing solar photovoltaic panels on town buildings in the near future."
The next milestone for North Haven to reach is having a threshold number of residents and/or businesses sign up for clean energy under the CTCleanEnergyOptions program, offered to customers of United Illuminating (UI). Once North Haven secures these enrollments, the town will be designated a Connecticut Clean Energy Community and be provided an “earned” 2-kilowatt solar PV system from CCEF.
