Prime Contractors Working with the SBIR Program

Prime contractors play a great role in the CT SBIR Program. When a small business is competing for an SBIR award one of the key components of the award is commercialization. We work with large companies to partner with the small businesses.

How Does it Benefit the Primes?

Let's say a large corporation is interested in a new technology to enhance the quality of certain components. By working with a small business on an SBIR solicitation the large corporation is able to learn, participate and benefit from the new technology without making a large investment in R&D. The SBIR award of $750,000 in a Phase II is funded totally by the federal government -- yet the Prime working with the small business often gets the benefit of the R&D without paying for it.

Additionally, Primes are always looking for small business suppliers for subcontracting on larger projects in a variety of technology areas.

How Does it Benefit the Small Business?

By working with a large company as a subcontractor on an SBIR award the small business develops a working relationship with the Prime. In addition, the large company is likely to work with purchase products derived from this new technology from the small business in future contracts.

How Does our Program Work with PRIMES?

  1. We send out a list of topics of interest to a Prime

  2. You find one (or more topics) you would like to work on

  3. You call the SBIR agency and speak with the TPOC (technical point of contact) to make sure you are on track and still want to pursue the application

  4. You email us with the topic number and description

  5. We give you the Prime's contact information

  6. You call the Prime to see if they are interested in your technology. If so, request a letter of support on their letterhead to be included in your SBIR application

How Can a Prime Learn More About Our Program?

Please contact us for more information. We would be delighted to add you to our list.

We succeed when you succeed.
