An early-stage biotechnology company, Metagenomix is developing novel methods of screening microbes for pharmacologically active compounds. Metagenomix plans to devise high throughput methods of identifying bacterial metabolites with pharmacological activity in organisms which currently cannot be grown using standard laboratory techniques. These methods involve the creation of metagenomic libraries which are composed of DNA fragments from the genomes of all of the bacteria found in a single ecological niche like a soil sample.
